Ombre Powder Eyebrows
If you are someone who has fairly thin brows, you’ve probably tried looking for different ways to get the appearance of fuller and thicker brows. However, it can be extremely difficult- if not impossible- to totally grow back your eyebrows. Or, you may need to somehow tame unruly brows, or you might want to save time when getting ready by always having groomed eyebrows. What do you do?
One of the most popular methods is known as ombre powder eyebrows. You may also hear salons refer to it as microshading or powdering.
What is Ombre Powder?
Ombre powder is a great way for you to get a much more natural appearance to your eyebrows. The color is lighter at the front (towards your nose) and darker at the tail (toward your temples). This is a much easier and less painful way for you to be able to get the appearance of fuller brows. A special machine is used to ‘shade’ your eyebrows in extremely thin layers by dispersing pigment into the top layer of your skin. People say that the results end up looking similar to the way your brows would look when you fill them in using an eyebrow pencil or powder. The procedure typically takes approximately two hours and there isn’t anything you need to do to your eyebrows beforehand. And, the results typically will last you for several years before you need to go in for touch ups.

Touching Up Ombre Powder
When you first get the procedure done, there will be about a two to three week healing period. We will get into the healing period in more detail below, but it is important that you follow all the directions that your specialist gave you in order for you to get the most desired outcome.
After the initial healing period is over, you’re required to get a touch up. This will usually take place between 4 and 5 weeks after your first procedure. The main purpose for this is so that your eyebrows will have the appearance that you want and to fix any issues that might have come about during the healing period. Since this is a non-invasive procedure, for example, there might have been some spots on your eyebrows where your skin didn’t pick up any pigment. You might have to go in for additional touch ups or talk to your specialist if you have oily skin, if you didn’t follow the aftercare instructions closely, or if your body simply didn’t accept the pigment as it should have.
After this, it’s totally up to you how many times you want to get touch ups. Some people say that they don’t need anything for two years or more, but many professionals will recommend that you come in every year for a touch up so that your eyebrows can continue looking perfect.
Ombre Powder FAQ
It’s safe to assume that you’re going to have quite a few questions before going into this procedure, so we will try to answer them here. Remember that the best answers to your questions can be given by the person who is doing the procedure on you.
This is probably the most common question regarding ombre powder eyebrows, but it ultimately depends on you. If you follow the directions given by your permanent makeup artist precisely, then the results will last a lot longer. It will also depend on your skin type, your overall health and lifestyle, and other factors. Despite the fact that your specialist will advise you to get touch ups every year, there are plenty of people who find that the procedure can last two or three years.
While some cosmetic procedures won’t work on certain skin tones or skin types, ombre powder eyebrows are not that picky. Whether you have oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, or mature skin, you will most likely be a candidate for the procedure. You also can get it done if you have had another cosmetic procedure done to your eyebrows in the past. It also doesn’t matter what color your eyebrow hairs are because the color that will be used for the pigment will be customized exactly as you want it.
Before the procedure begins, your specialist will apply a local anesthetic to relieve some pain, but in reality, this is nowhere near as painful as microblading, for example. Many people who have ombre powder eyebrows said that it feels similar to someone tweezing their eyebrows very quickly or like a slight tingling. But since this is a non-invasive procedure, it does not cause a lot of trauma or damage to your skin, and you also likely won’t bleed at all. So, the pain should be very minimal. And some people have found the procedure so comfortable that they fell asleep while their practitioner was working!
You may feel a bit discouraged by the healing process, but understand that it’s only temporary and healing lasts between four and six weeks.
Immediately after the procedure, your eyebrows will be very dark and similar to the “sharpie eyebrows” we see often. This is completely normal and something you should anticipate when getting permanent makeup. There’s also a chance that your brows will appear red and a bit swollen. Then, after two days or so, you’ll see some scabs. This won’t be pleasant as you’ll see the scabs coming off. You’re also going to be itchy, but scratching your face will have an adverse effect. When the scabs start to fall off, you’ll see that your eyebrows will look a lot lighter than you expected, but this is also normal, as they will start to take on their final shape within a week. After 21 days or so, your eyebrows should be done healing, and this is the point where you will go in for your touch up to fill in any gaps caused by healing. Make sure you follow your specialist’s instructions closely for the best results.
AFTERCARE is very important. You must follow the steps below EXACTLY so that your eyebrows will heal into a nice natural color and last a long time. Remember that your eyebrows are healing so it is normal for your skin to be red, dark, and some will peel off within 3 weeks. Do not worry, after 4 weeks, the color will come back, then we can do the touch-up after 4 weeks.
Each individual may heal differently and healing times may vary
- Approximately in two hours after the procedure wash your eyebrows gently with water and gentle soap or face cleanser
Then No more washing necessary. Keep eyebrows as dry as you can - Do not expose your healing skin to direct shower spray, skin creams, ointments, or lotions
- Do not compress the face in the pillow while sleeping
- Do not expose your healing skin to direct sun, tanning beds, hot tubs (tub bath if body area treated), saunas, salt water, chlorinated pools, or extremely hot water for 2 weeks following your procedure.
- Some itching is normal. DO NOT PICK, PEEL, OR SCRATCH the treated area or your color may heal unevenly and you risk scarring and infection.
- If you are planning chemical exfoliation, or other medical procedure, please inform your physician of your cosmetic tattoo.
- The use of sunscreen after healing is completed will help prevent premature fading. Sun exposure will fade your permanent cosmetics and may cause irritation even years later.
APROXIMATE HEALING SCHEDULE
Eye Brows
Day: What to Expect:
- 1-2 What you see is about 20-60% darker, bolder, and more solid than what your healed result will present. There may be minimal swelling; however as the eyebrow area typically does not retain much fluid, swelling will be limited.
The top layers of skin will begin to shed about day 3-5 and you will see a loss of color. This is normal. - 3 Your eyebrows may begin to itch and the pigment may appear somewhat raised. DON’T SCRATCH THEM!
- 4-6 Your skin is now in rapidly exfoliating and if left alone, will shed evenly. The color under the skin will continue to appear light until the epidermis becomes more transparent.
- 30-40 Your eyebrows have had a full cycle of cellular regeneration in which the tattoo has now become part of the dermis, seen under the epidermis.
